After retiring from teaching college and medical administration, Dr. C. Arthur Ellis, Jr. turned to his favorite past-time of writing. Since he was always fascinated with the hometown true-crime story of Ruby McCollum, he decided that this would be his first book, which he entitled Zora Hurston and the Strange Case of Ruby McCollum.
Years later, he discovered that this murder story was one of three along the banks of the Suwannee, all of which had ties to the illegal gambling game of bolita. He then researched and chronicled those murders in Blood on the Suwannee.
