A therapist, teacher and writer, Hendrika de Vries is the author of When a Toy Dog Became a Wolf and the Moon Broke Curfew, a memoir about survival, feminine heroism and the mother-daughter bond in dark times. It won the 2019 Sarton Women’s Book Award. A child in Nazi-occupied Amsterdam; a teenage immigrant, champion swimmer, young wife and mother in Australia, Hendrika landed in America in the turbulent 1960s. The focus of her life’s work has been healing trauma, life transitions and empowerment of women.

She lives in Santa Barbara with her husband.
